Hu You Ben is a Chinese artist ¨C more specifically hailing from the province of Bao Ding ¨C whose works¡¯ predominant characteristic is the texture resulting from crushed paper painted either monochromatically or in abstract multilayered colourful patterns which reminds the author of the work by fellow artist, Sunrise (also present at this exhibit). Not a newcomer to the art community, the artist has been on the battleground since the late ¡®80s and has been presented, written about, and collected by local and international organizations; institutions and collectors too numerous to list on this brief introduction. More praises readily available in much of this world¡¯s press aren¡¯t needed to establish this gentlemen¡¯s notoriety.

Petra Jager von Rosenberg hails from Germany and has been living in the middle kingdom for over two years. When one glances at her CV, one can hardly avoid to suspect, at the very least, a strong connection between her careers as jeweler and a painter. A similar impression the author of these lines gets from Filipino jeweler-painter-musician Maje, although these works are dissimilar in a number of ways. A systematic organization of details can be felt by the author in P¡¯s apparent chaotic abstraction where rigorously inorganic metals compete with, while however sometimes complementing, forms full of life. The metal slashing or sheltering, the stone embedded into the fleshy or cutting through it are but a few impressions felt about her paintings.
Impression out of a random pick out of her work: It¡¯s like a bewildering map from a mysterious, primitive, and long extinct tribal society.

Forty- seven year old Sunrise, a pillar of the Beijing artistic community acknowledged by the people from hardcore punks in the old city to the goddamned artistic intelligentsia of the big Gray Town, has been painting since she was able to hold a brush. The author, who acquired one of her older crusts, feels that he must warn the reader of his possible favorably bent opinion before carrying on with his impression of her works although the work she decided to present to this exhibit is of abstract nature, a style he doesn¡¯t particularly understand or appreciate as much as you might do. Colorful and devoid of any inhibition, these paintings seem to be the product of a mind (and heart) not afraid of experiencing life through use and abuse of what is available while a surprising sense of caring for the already acquired is present in the strong¨Carmored -boundaries set between what appears to be fulfilled desires. Hey, man, you take a look and you get what THE author¡¯s talking about.

    Alain Cislaghi

What news do we have from Beijing?
    How are things there?
Wish I could have been there
